HAMPTON HILL JUNIOR SCHOOL SUMMER FETE
Sunday 13th July 2008
please come along & support us...

The vibrant and forward thinking Hampton Hill Junior School is at the very epicentre of Hampton Hill's close knit community and features:

  • High quality teaching and learning

  • A well resourced and well organised learning environment

  • Targeted support for pupils with Special Educational Needs

  • Extension groups for the most able

  • A modern ICT suite and a food technology room

  • A wide range of after school clubs in sport, music, drama and art

  • Competitive teams in a variety of sports

  • Instrumental lessons via Richmond Music Trust

  • A breakfast club from 7.45am

  • A friendly atmosphere within a stimulating and caring school environment

The school's aim is to deliver a curriculum which is broad and balanced and reflects the importance of the basics of numeracy and literacy as well as the experiences, challenges and enjoyment gained from subjects such as sport, art and music.

Together with the family and the community the school strives to provide a caring and tolerant learning and social environment in which the other aims can be achieved.

The objectives of the school are to provide opportunities for success and developing self-image and independence by:

  • Adapting the curriculum to meet individual needs

  • Providing the opportunity for decision making in a variety of situations, taking into account the needs of others as well as themselves

  • Encouraging active participation by providing 'hands-on' experience in all areas of the curriculum

  • Building confidence in a child so that he/she is able to accept praise and criticism and is

  • encouraged to learn by his/her successes and mistakes.

A strong link has been made with a school in Japan and student exchanges take place on a regular basis which broaden the children's horizons and teaches them all about a completely different culture in a far away land.

The school has recently been rearranged and refurbished with brand new carpeting through out. During this refurbishment the children were asked if they wanted to have shiny new desks or stay with the traditional wooden hinged top school desks. They voted to stay with the originals.

There is a strong commitment by the Hampton Hill Junior School teachers to educating the children about the need for sustainability and a greener cleaner future as outlined below.

Note from Bill Jerman - Head teacher
In the Spring of 2008, Hampton Hill Junior School was chosen as one of 36 "Leading Sustainable Schools" in the country. This is an initiative run by the Governors and The National College of School Leadership . The school had to show high quality leadership in the school-through Ofsted and a real practical and definite commitment and vision for developing Sustainability in our own school, other schools and the local and regional community. We received a grant to use to "spread the word" based on the Governors National Strategy for Sustainability-known as " The Eight Doorways".

Our particular strengths are:

* our leading work in Global Education. We have developed a range of contacts across the world to enhance our curriculum and widen the pupils access to the wider world. We have a very strong link with Japan and our Partner school in Nagano. In fact some of their pupils and staff are joining us for a few days next week.....you are very welcome to visit us. (we took a group of 9 and 10 year olds to Japan last March-only the second primary school in the UK to do this.

* our new developments with renewable energy. First school in the Borough to make significant strides in using a range of sources. Our old oil burning boilers were replaced the highly efficient "intelligent" gas boilers and these are supplemented with 20 solar thermal panels on the Windmill Road roof which generate enough energy to heat our hot water and on some days supplement the heating system. On the flat roof we have 30 photo voltaic panels which we hope will contribute up to a quarter of our electricity. A small, new design wind turbine is being erected on the flat hall roof and we are planning to install a rain water harvesting system to make use of the rain water that falls on our roof. Its a fantastically exciting project and particularly special in that it shows that these new technologies can be installed on buildings 80 years old!!!! - not just new builds.

* Inclusion----we are one of the most inclusive school s in the Borough and last years Ofsted and the award of the Inclusion Quality Mark are recognition of this.

The status of Leading Sustainable School means that we aim to raise peoples awareness of the issues and we have already been involved in a variety of presentations to a range of groups...Head teachers, governors and through The Richmond Environment Forum.
