I am delighted to contribute to the HHA web project. In my 10 years as MP I have been struck by the strength of local community identity and solidarity in the various urban ‘villages’ I represent: Hampton Hill; Hampton; Teddington; Hampton Wick; Whitton; St Margaret’s; Twickenham. To an outsider these villages might appear as anonymous outer suburbs of the London agglomeration approximating to wards of the local council and the catchment area of a local school or branch library or high street. But, as in Hampton Hill, there is also a dense network of voluntary activities reflected in the work of the Greenwood Centre, the Christmas Carnival, the Theatre, and the work of the Association in defending the local environment. I see my work as an MP as supporting local initiatives, where I can, not in a way that duplicates or cuts across the role of the councillors and voluntary groups but to complement them. I have, at various points, taken up issues in Hampton Hill in relation to the management of Bushy Park; vandalism and policing; facilities for local young people; services on the Fulwell/Hampton branch line; the funding of Hampton Pool; post office reorganisation and closures; school catchment areas; as well as wider issues which impact on the neighbourhood like aircraft noise. Although I have in the last few years had a prominent role at a national level, latterly as my Party’s Acting Leader, I believe my primary responsibility is to the people I represent in Parliament and in this capacity I look forward to working closely with the Association.
