data link

Over the years concern has been highlighted within the borough population that they should fall victim to an emergency in the home where, for whatever reason, they are rendered unconscious or unfortunately become seriously confused, the emergency services and care agencies might have insufficient knowledge of their condition and that valuable life threatening time could be wasted trying to find out.  Data Link has been created for such eventualities.  The scheme assists the emergency services to identify the person[s] concerned, gives them information about long term conditions, medication and known allergies, together with the addresses of their doctor, their next of kin or contact person and details of anyone who is dependent on them.

The scheme consists of a small clearly labelled waterproof plastic container being kept in the door of the household refrigerator.  Placed in this container is a folded information sheet, which gives medical and personal details and photographs relating to the occupiers.  The fridge has been selected because it is the single most common, easy to find item in the average home,  To indicate the presence of this information a matching label is fixed to the outside of the fridge door and a further label fixed above the lock on the inside of the main access door to the property.

Whilst Data Link is probably of most interest to the infirm or elderly, the scheme is intended to cover everybody regardless of their age group – emergencies know no boundary.  Single parents with young children at school could find the scheme just as helpful and reassuring,

Let’s hope that one of the main worries related to being an elderly couple or to living alone can be partly allayed by keeping a Data Link canister in the fridge.”
